Hi TedIf you want your TV sound to be part of your main system feed it into the preamp from "audio out", NOT speaker out. Some Sony's audio output (mute, volume) can be controlled from their remote in this situation but some cannot (a techo could soon alter the circuitry to do this if required).
However if you want a stand alone TV system then a preamp is not necessary and you can use any reasonable amp for the job - pick up a used NAD or Rotel.
For many years we used a Sony as part of our main system but be aware you can run into hum problems due to earth loops. Do a little experimenting before getting deeply involved dollar wise. A simple amp beside the Sony might avoid some of these problems. It is all worth the trouble as the sound from most TV sets is pretty pathetic due to their tinny speakers. A good amp & speaker set up greatly improves the watching experience. You might then like to go a step further and purchase a used pro logic decoder (these are going pretty cheaply used as people switch over to Dolby Digital) as many programs contain surround sound. Again this increases the impact of programs - even documentaries.
