Can you be more graphic?

Sorry, but I don't get the "picture." My understanding is that a DVD with 500 line resolution, playing on a DTV with potentially 1080 line resolution, puts up only alternate lines (1,3,5 etc). Line doubling copies lines to the space below.

First, is that right?
Second, how does progressive scan work? What does it place in the even lines?
Thanks. This is important to understand before spending bucks on the DTV and a newer DVD.
