Good topic. I agree with your observations re VE disk. Another very good one is the AVIA Guide to HT disk. Cable-wise, the obvious advise is to use component over either composite or s-video. Assuming you are already doing this, however, IMHO, there is little, if any, advantage in expensive "videophile" component cables over those that you can DIY for little investment in time or money, using 75ohm RG-6 and reasonable quality terminations like the gold plated ones sold at RS (RCA, BNC, F-type, and the various adapters). A good crimping tool helps a lot. 100 feet of 75 ohm RG-6 sells at Home depot for something like $20, if I remember correctly. Markertek sells quality cabling, too. Watch this spark some controversy from those entrenched in the videophile cable camp.
