Pro Logic IIx

I just got my son a Harmon Kardon 235, for a quarter of the price of my Rotel 1055 receiver (which is similar to the 1066 preamp). The HK has Pro Logic IIx, which takes the side channel info and matrixes it to goes to additional rears in a 7.1 setup. What's really cool is it can be set up to be added to a Dolby Digital playback (DD for L/C/R and sides, PLIIx for back rears).

But after setting up his 7.1 system, I'm not sure if the additional 2 rear speakers were worth the effort. His sides are direct radiating, which pretty much overwhelm the rear soundfield. I guess it depends on the room/speakers.
