If your receiver is doing double duty for music and movies, and the music is important to you, you can do no better than Arcam (without going to expensive separates, of course.)Their latest receiver, the Arcam AVR300, is a killer, with one of the best pre/pro sections I've heard, certainly the best in a HT receiver - you'd have to spend a LOT more to better it. (BTW, I come from the high end 2 channel world).
The AVR300 will set you back around $1800 street price. However, it may last you a looooooong time, so consider it an investment. When and if you get really power hungry speakers, you can always add a more powerful outboard amp and keep the terrific AVR300 for your pre/pro.
If you don't have a large room and large speakers, the Arcam AVR200 might serve.
I've had several HT receivers (Marantz, Denon, and I've heard the NADs) and would take the AVR300 over any of them. Second choice would probably be Rotel.
