Common Q -- why do I need an AV pre/pro?

I have a couple of general questions, which perhaps have been asked before. I own a nice DVD player (Denon DVM-4800), which provides DTS and DD decoding, in addition to DVD-Audio and basic bass management. I also own several decent quality power amplifiers.

Could I not simply use a 6-ch. analog preamp, assuming such a device exists, and let the DVD player perform the decoding functions?

If I were to consider other sources, such as TV program broacast in Dolby multichannel, would I then need a separate decoder? Or is that something a cable box/tuner should take care of for me?

Thanks and regards,

Rob
