I just purchased the Sony 40" XBR1. It has a fan but is quiet. You can only hear it if no other sound is present. Picture is awesome with roof antenna displaying digital and HD chanels.

I thought I would be at a disadvantage without cable tv but most broadcast chanels have secondary digital chanels and alternates.
