DLP?

I'm presently in the US and recently spent some time with my son tackling exactly this same choice. We looked at heaps of displays in various sizes and concluded (as some independent tests have) that no particular technology has any significant advantage over another except for the burn in difficulties with plasma already disussed here. After much soul searching we agreed that one display was outstanding - the Sony 60" Grand WEGAâ„¢ SXRDâ„¢ Rear Projection HDTVKDS-R60XBR1 described in the link below.

However, the price on this rear projection unit was high so he decided to defer purchase until it came up on sale at a significantly lower price. Well they dropped the price and it did come on sale so he bought one for around $3,500 - still very expensive and beyond most budgets. However the picture quality is breathtaking. I've always been unimpressed with NTSC, smugly feeling our PAL system to be far superior. Maybe it still is in standard definition, but this Sony blows away my previous prejudices as the picture quality on his set is superb.

Not sure if this will help but the bottom line on all this is that neither LCD, plasma or whatever can be claimed to be universally superior technology. It all depends on how the technology is implemented and that can involve software as well as hardware, something frequently overlooked. So, my advice, for what it is worth, is to do what we did. Look at the various displays on offer and narrow it down to 2 or 3 which appeal the most, disregarding the technology involved. Then look at the same displays in other stores to make sure there are not significant differences in your chosen models in different locations as this could indicate quality control problems (unlikely, but worth checking out). You then have the task of getting the best price. Good luck.
