I'd do the latter. On a budget I like Pioneer VSX 516K (7.1, lots of bells and whistles. Currently 179 at circuit city but watch for a better sale price. Last week it was $169.)
If you need more speaker pairs you could do worse than Best Buy Insignias at $50 the pair (sometimes cheaper--havent checked today).Pull out your Sub from storage and you are set!D
