The sudden drop in Amazon's rankings of the HD DVD "Planet Earth" from #4 to #15 is interesting -- is this a brief glitch, a sign that sales are tapering off, or what? The coming weeks will tell.
Alas, the BD version doesn't seem to have gained any new traction as a result.
Sales of other high def programs look weak in either format and certainly aren't anything to brag about. "Pirates", "Apocalypto" and "Matrix" all appeared briefly in Amazon's Top 100 but dropped quickly.
Why is Planet Earth such a killer app for high definition?
-It's a gorgeous production
-It probably appeals to a very broad demographic
-I think it's seen as having some educational value, hence folks balk less at the premium price.
Most other high definition fare seems geared to a mostly male audience
