I have a Sony 36 XBR in one of my systems, and it certainly can do 1080i with component video connection. It's connected to a TiVo HD/DVR and a Sony 9000ES CD/SACD/DVD player. Picture quality from the TiVo HD/DVR is 1080i, but with the Sony 9000ES playing a DVD it is not quite as good as the upscaled (1080i) picture from my 9100ES connected to a Sony 40" LCD monitor via HDMI -- I think component video lacks the copy protection avaliable with HDMI, so the 9000ES doesn't upscale. Bottomline: I think you can get 1080i from HDTV, but not DVD.
