I visited the Sony store in SF this past weekend and was surprised to see the current top-of-the-line BDP-S1 selling for $499.99 (reduced from $799.99). I'm thinking this model is being phased out in anticipation of the new BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 models being released at the end of this month. The price reduction on the BDP-S1 now makes it the same price as the BDP-S300 (at least at retail).
So...(recent comments regarding BD Profile 1.1 or 2.0 notwithstanding) which would you buy? I know the S1 is a first-generation product, while the 300 is second generation. Or would you wait for the 500 or 2000ES? This would be my first BD player, and I'm inclined not to spend a lot of $$$ right now, as the technology still seems to be evolving. (But I want hi-def video now!) I'm primarily interested in video quality, both from BD and DVD; audio is of secondary importance, as I'll be listening via the 2-channel analog outputs of the BD player.
Thanks,
Russell
