A reason for picking sides would be to attempt to force an end to the format war....

in anticipation of increased HD sales as a result of current fence-sitters buying into the winning format. If that's a sufficient reason for Warner to pick sides, they would likely to pick Blu-ray as Blu-ray has the most studio support and better software sales.
