All electronics that do processing functions these days can benefit from firmware and software updates and the approach to that is to connect the device to your network and download current firmware. The PS3 and other blu-ray players don't need new hardware, just new firmware and software to take full advantage of BD+. But all devices should do this, PCs being a prime example and TiVos being another.
