Thx, Jack G--received my DVE. I must be getting use to receiving and adjusting TVs that are too bright, contrasty, colored, edgy, etc. I had adjusted the Saunsung subjectively long before I received DVE. Turns out the only things I changed were 'sharpness', which was at 10 (of 100) and now is zero, and brightness (black level), which I had too low. (I'd rather see about nothing in the really dark scenes rather than seeing glaringly bright scenes [= light-gray blacks].)The Sansung overscans less than I thought--only 2 - 3% laterally and about 4% vertically.
I'm almost ashamed, however, to admit to joining the format war* by ordering an HD-XA1, the top-of-the-2-years-ago-line Toshiba HD-DVDP (whew!). I was surprised to learn that most HD-DVDPs do not have 6-channel analog outputs, which I must have for my otherwise-all-analog system. I decided NOT to spend lots of money at this point, as I'm still waiting for that 2nd-generation dual-format player**; the XA1 was only $394 delivered to me, and it's supposed to be brandnew, sealed in factory box, etc.
Have ordered 9 HD-DVDs thru Amazon, some used and quite affordable. We'll see!
.* I react to Sony's greed the same way I react to Microsoft's greed--I consider both bullies and I try to avoid them.
** I see that Samsung has announced one.
