..ALL newly built DVD players will be able to play both standard and Blu Ray disks. At some perhaps more distant point, production of standard formatted DVD discs will cease and new DVDs will be issued only in Blu Ray format.Perhaps for a while the back side of the disk with have the DVD in 480p for those who haven't yet gotten the new players--but this is a transitionary phase.
Remember not so long ago when only the more expensive DVD players outputted a progressive scan component video signal?
I notice that full screen standard DVDs have become an endangered type on newly issued movies, as people gradually dump their 480i CRT sets in favor of a 16;9 format.
In watching a DVD on the new 720p 32" Panasonic LCD last night using an older (2004, probably) Toshiba 3950 player the picture was crystal clear to the point of me wondering at that screen size why anyone would ever need or want either a Blu ray DVD or a 1080p rather than 720p set.
The Blu ray and 1080p is really only a significant issue in my mind from the 42 inch screen sizes on up, and even then only if you tend to like to watch a 50 inch+ picture from maybe 5 ft away.
I'm sorry if I am still wondering why an average consumer replacing their old 27 inch CRT with a 32 or 37" flat panel LCD is going to get really excited about spending the extra money either on Blu Ray or 1080p technologies. Sorry that I still think most average consumers aren't going to be willing to pay much for the extra resolution. THey will accept it if it is free, or nearly so, but they won't go out of their way to spend money to buy in.
There are new technologies I will get around to adopting eventually and then there are new technologies that I must have next week, and unfortunately Blu Ray and 1080p fall in the first category for me.
