I'm very happy with my (now 7 year old) 480p panny plasma 42".
It all has to do with viewing distance...
I'm seated about 12 feet away and it (still) looks fabulous.
yes you can see the dots up close -- who watches tv like that ?
I'm using a Sony SAT HD300 (directv) as source.
{the Directv hardware is crap -- you can get a Sony sat receiver on ebay for $40 ( mfg. list $800+)}
1080p is marketing hype -- you don't need that kind of resolution for screens under 65"... most folk ... the kind of crap they watch (like Battlestar Gigantica -- the show was shot on pro video tape -- not film like 60's era Star Trek) looks worse when up-converted to hi-res. ... you can see all the noise from the video tape !
