Spend a bit more, get a decent brand name.

I bought one pretty much when they came out about 10 years ago (Sony DVD-S3000 or something; cost me $950 or so). Works fine to this day. So does my Panny player (~5 years old) and my Pioneer recorder (~2-3 years old). Never had a problem with one of them. Spend a bit more.
