At the minimum, get an HDMI receiver that will process multi-channel PCM (none of that switching-only crap like the 1017). If you can get one that will decode the advanced audio codecs, all the better (but not necessary if the player -- such as the PS3 -- decodes and outputs multi-channel PCM over HDMI).
