Internet sales are not taxed (unless the company operates in your state) in the US. However, depending on the weight/size/carrier used for the item, the shipping charge may be close to or more than the tax amount. All variables must be considered before purchase (reputable dealer, shipping charge, tax, sales/promotions, local dealer exchange/replace program, etc) and not all will be given the same weight by everyone.
For some items, it may make sense, in the long run, to pay more for an item if it can be obtained locally.
That's just in the states. What about the poor Canadiens who sometimes pay 20 - 40% more the exact same item in the Great White North that gets shipped to the states! I was almost in tears (not!) when I read stories from our friends north of the border on the AVS plasma forum. Many of them drive across the border to purchase American goods because of the price discrepancy.
