RE: Is there a flaw in my plan? setting up my system

">>run the optical audio from the TV down to the recevier.<<

Why? This adds an extra (unnecessary) connection. Better to run from the digital out of the Oppo to the receiver instead."

It doesn't add an extra connection. If HDMI goes to the TV, the audio gets to the TV that way and then there's a single connection carrying it from the TV to the receiver. If you run the digital from the Oppo to the receiver you're still only running one HDMI cable and one digital cable.

The advantage of going from the Oppo to the receiver as you suggest is that TVs don't necessarily handle audio all that brilliantly and the TV may process the HDMI audio signal and only send a 2 channel signal to the receiver. Going from the Oppo to the receiver guarantees that surround sound data will be sent to the receiver.
