Having worked for a laser manufacturer I am familiar with the wavelength and characteristics of diode lasers but only passingly familiar with plasma twisting technology. However it seems to me that whether the laser pointer affects the plasma or not (I would guess that it would have no effect, the only danger with plasma is undervoltage conditions or burn in from static images) it is an unsafe practice to shine a red diode at a reflective surface. You risk severe eye damage or even blindness. I believe that there are LED light dot pointers (in various colors) available at low cost that would serve as a safe pointer.
