Well, I can sure say not all BD players do. I have only owned a PS3 and S350 (both Sony) and they didn't. So thats why I'm trying to find out if most others do, manuals for ones I've considered don't specifically mention this point. Not even for the Oppo 83 which I'll probably get next week, regardless of this point.
Most people use the display to do it if their player doesn't, or their AVR instead if it has a good chipset for it. For all I know most people don't even check the resolution coming out of their BDP, rather they just look at the displayed resolution...not at all the same thing...and are assuming their player is upscaling the BD source over HDMI if they didn't set something else up. But I am anal of course, always verify exactly what's coming out of the BDP (so many possible options!) before I settle down to actually watch/listen.
Anyway, I'd appreciate it if anybody could check the res coming out of their BDP the next time they watch a BD 480p "extra" feature. Just so I'd know if this upscaling is now standard in newer players.
BTW my AVR doesn't have a good chipset for HDMI upscaling. Usually the player is the first choice for upscaling though.
