That's a terrific deal! I've always thought the Samsung plasmas looked terrific.
I still enjoy mine from time to time. As long as you use it for just Movie or TV viewing your good. Do not use it for gaming or as a PC monitor. I don't care what anyone says about how far the technology has come. I know from experience you can still burn images into a plasma if you use it for the wrong applications. It plainly states this in the Samsung owner's manual.
"A still image displayed too long may cause permanent damage to the PDP Panel.
Watching the Plasma TV in 4:3 format for a long period of time may leave traces of borders displayed on
the left, right and center of the screen caused by the difference of light emission on the screen.
Playing a DVD or a game console may cause similar effects to the screen.
Damages caused by the above effect are not covered by the Warranty.
After-images on the Screen.Displaying still images from Video games and PC for longer than a certain period of time may produce partial after-images.
From Pioneer's manual
Phosphor Properties
The following are typical effects and characteristics of a phosphor-based matrix display and as such are not
covered by the Warranty:
• Permanent residual images upon the phosphors of the panel
Change the picture periodically when showing static images, such as a fixed image from a PC or a TV game
unit, for longer periods.
• Avoid leaving fixed images such as time of day indicator or channel logos on screen whenever possible.
• Display content in a wide aspect ratio (no black or gray bars on any side of the content). This flat panel TV is
equipped with multiple wide-screen viewing modes; use one of these modes to fill the entire screen with
content. View in a wide aspect ratio unless doing so would be a copyright infringement.
• Set the Side Mask detection function to Mode 1 or Mode 2. High Definition 16:9 aspect ratio images
containing side masks are detected automatically and side masks are added or the image appears in fullscreen.
• Avoid showing dark images after still images for a period of time. In most cases, any image retention caused
by this sequence can be corrected by displaying bright images for a similar period of time.Avoid displaying the same image on the flat panel TV continuously over a long period. If the same image is
displayed continuously for several hours, or for shorter periods over several days, a permanent after-image
may remain on the screen. This after-image is permanent because the fluorescent materials burned.
Burned images may fade eventually after playing other video sequences but do not disappear completely. So price has nothing to do with it. The Pioneers can have image retention like the rest.
This is why I replaced my Samsung plasma with a Sharp LCD for HTPC duty. This is also why as much as like some plasmas. The LED would be a better option for me and others that don't want to go through the hassles of changing channels or aspect ratios just to keep from burning images in the screen. Been there done that already.Enjoy your new toy!
