Do you

turn down the sharpness on the flat screen monitors? Most are set way to high and give that cartoonish picture. That used to be the recommendation even for the rear projections sets. The sharpness control tends to pull the color to the color boundary edge and takes away from the gradation of colors, particularly blacks.

Setting the sharpness at factory settings is impressive under fluorescent store lighting, but suck for the more subdued lighting at home. In the rear projection days, they used to warn that changing the sharpness took the set 30 minutes to settle down, so if you change the settings, let it sit for a while and wait for the computer to catch up. The picture quality usually increases noticeably, and with greater detail too.
