RE: I would still suspect cables first,

The Denon Rep. suggested I "boot" the HDMI cables, leaving them disconnected for at least 15 min. then reattach and power up equipment in order (1. Monitor 2. Receiver 3. Sat. 4. DVD ). This had no effect, a dropout occurred hours later. Everything internally (to the receiver) is solid and appears as if assembled yesterday, including that unique "electronics that have never been burned or abused smell" As a troubleshooting aid, I've ordered a complete set of new HDMI cables. I know I am not the only victim of this malfunction... it's just so elusive ...
