Aligning heads on an S-VHS deck

I posted a while back looking for help on a colour problem from my Mitsubishi HSM 1000. On playback of both standard and S-VHS tapes the picture is prone to losing the red signal completely.
I have changed the leads, rewired a number of times all to no avail.
Recently taped a Rugby League match (irrelevant but help place me geographically) for a mate and he had problems with playback.
Could it be to do with the alignment of the head, and should I mess with it?
