I have in front of me an excellent article from 'Consumers Reports' magazine on 32 and 36 inch direct view (tube) TV's. They extensively tested several models, and the best 36" TV's in terms of picture quality, both with S-Video input and antenna/cable input were as follows (these are the top rated ones with retail prices of $1000 or less, and in many cases, street prices are around $750-$900). This is a good starting (and finishing point, for some) point. The listed TV's are all 36" models.Toshiba 36A40
Toshiba 36AX60
Hitachi 36GX01B
JVC AV-36120
JVC AV-36D201Surprisingly, many Panasonics did not fare as well, and the Sony's are over $1000.
Hope this helps!
