To hell with what their tests say! Panasonic and Sony are making the best CRT sets on the market at the moment. Unfortunately its never any good going into a dealer and looking at the pictures on display there, as too often they are badly set up or are one of 10's of sets being fed of cheap distribution amps.
I've seen just about everything available on the market in the UK, Plasma's, CRT's projection and projectors. Budget was not an issue for me, but I bought the new Sony 36FS70 which I think is equivelant to your XBR400. This set is easily capable of showing up the shortcommings in transmission quality. personally I would trie to adjust your budget and get a 32" Sony or at least a Panasonic equivalent. Try also to make sure it has an RGB input for your DVD, this makes a real difference in performance.
