Your DVD deck doesn't have 5.1 outputs because it's not a DVD-Audio player, and this format is the only one in DVD that, because of copy protection issues, has to be handled outside the bitstream. It's odd that your mini AIWA has 5.1 (direct analog) inputs, but no Toslink (optical). The RCA deck must have a COAX output, yes? Does the AIWA have a coaxial input? If so, you'll get your movie surround via that hookup. And COAX is better than optical, anyway. Why would you buy a new A/V receiver then attempt to route it thru a mini-system? Is it because the speakers with the mini are hardwired? Do yourself a favor: buy the new reciever along with some decent surround speakers. A lot of the new 'surround speaker systems' are not very costly, but will probably beat the tar out of a one-box 'mini'. Then move the little AIWA to the bedroom. Good luck.
