It was the industry, via AAA, that pushed for laws making jaywalking ticketable.
The industry also developed school curricula to teach kids that the roads belonged to cars, even though public roads belong to everybody including pedestrians and cyclists.
After the second world war, the country was reordered around the automobile via fierce lobbying by the industry. GM and a couple of other interested parties were allowed buy up and dismantle commuter interurban rail systems. The result is a country where every working age adult needs a car, regardless of whatever public transportation options are available.
President Eisenhower was enamored by Germany's Autobahn, the auto industry took advantage. Now we have interstates that don't ease congestion, have wiped out entire ecosystems, divided and demolished communities. And we can't afford to maintain them.
We also subsidize oil exploration and extraction, which, as you said, keeps gasoline prices artificially low.
Government policy also encourages people to buy gas guzzlers, which is totally illogical. Pickup trucks are protected by a 25% tariff and aren't subject to the gas guzzler tax.
Despite the post from the resident know it all farther up the thread, EV sales aren't tanking. They're actually increasing, just not as fast as expected.
But is that surprise? How much of a market is there for some ridiculous cartoon like the Hummer EV? Tesla's sales are tanking because Elon Musk has made Tesla uncool.
