One of the very best American movies of the last 20 years, IMO. If you enjoyed Mulholland Drive (I did) you'll *love* Blue Velvet - they're from the same cranny of Lynch's imagination. The Straight Story is good, but it's not the twisty thrill ride of BV or MH.I'd also second The Twin Peaks series...as long as you realize that Lynch really didn't care about who killed Laura Palmer.
I do love Lynch's films, I've seen 'em all...I would rather see one of Lynch's failures than someone else's potboiler.
One of the highest compliments paid him was Brit director Peter Greenaway (Draughtman's Contract; Prospero's Books; The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover). When asked if he'd seen and liked Blue Velvet, Greenaway replied that BV was so good, he wished he'd made it himself. Just a thought...if you enjoyed MH, you might also try the films of Greenaway.
Follow Ups:
Blue Velvet is absolutely essential. However, I would hold off on buying it as there is a new Special Edition DVD on the way. Also, though it's not by Lynch, you may want to check out Clair Denis's Trouble Every Day, a film dealing with very Lynchian themes (best if I say no more...).Best Regards,
Nathaniel Axel
P.S. Though this may not even be worth recommending due to availability, if you can get a copy of it I strongly reccommend you check out Shion Sono's Suicide Club (aka Jisatsu Circle or Suicide Circle), truly one of the strangest, most brilliant films I've ever seen.
Not as good as Muholland Dr. or the very best, but still very good, a ****1/2 star movie...I have been Lynched. For the availability of movie X, I souldn't have a problem finding it at my local video store, La Boite Noire at www.boitenoire.com (under construction). With over 35 000 titles, they are miles ahead of the competitors. The only true and biggest movie lover's video store here in Montreal.
thanks again guys.
