Teasing us? That film I don't think was ever released in the US. Here we don't need no stinky Michel Simon... Love that guy, a tremendous actor. Did you see him in L'Atalante? What depth, what character!"Our" Pledge, with all the hoopla surrounding it, was just an OK effort.
Somewhat along the same lines story-wise was the Insomnia... a great film... the one with Stellan Skarsgård, not the remake, of course.
Follow Ups:
NO teasing ! The German one is a classical here..Michel Simon is our Charles Laughton, without over blowing his roles ( I love Charles! ...Think of the Hunter`s Night or his role in The paradine case..)
Vigo`s how can you ask a question like this! Did YOU see is film" De Nice? ( my home town ? )
The Pledge was an effort to be an effort...a little bit of that ..and of this....now a night between -this film is very ,,,hum ..bad,in my eyes....
(Penn) himself takes the Pledge: no more directing. The scenes of child torture in the Jack N re-make are sickening, and added nothing to the movie. Gratuitous, pure and simple. For a really fine similarly plotted movie, I recommend "M." Peter Lorre is a very underrated guy. Maybe because so many mimics picked on him for so long?
