While perhaps best known as Rumpole of "Rumpole of the Bailey", Leo McKern was a well-known character actor in quite a few good movies. I'll never forget his hilarous role in "HELP!" He was a very fine actor and I'll miss him.
And as Rumpole - well, he was Rumpole in the same way that Raymond Burr was Perry Mason and Bogie was Sam Spade. When I read a Rumpole story, it is McKern that I picture. He was the perfect actor for the part. His shoes are gonna be mighty hard to fill!
Why are most of the truly great character actors British?

First remember him for his role in the film A Man For All Seasons.
