I really like the films of Jacques Tati, including M. Hulot's Holiday, Mon Oncle and Playtime. I think they improve in subsequent watching as many visual gags are a bit subtle and they're often in rapid-fire sequence. On first viewing, I sorta liked them, but found them a little slow and tedious. But by the 3rd or 4th viewing, I was in awe.Amelie was a lot of fun.
Tampopo is a favorite food movie, and for classic Samurai/"Western" action, don't forget the Kurosawa/Mifune movies including The Seven Samurai. And the effects are somewhat dated, but I enjoy Kwaidan, a collection of Japanese ghost stories.
A movie about insects, with hardly any narration may not sound promising, but Microcosmos is well worth a look, and you won't have to send the kids off to bed.
For pitch-black humor, try Eating Rauol or Swimming With Sharks.
