In Reply to: Why? There are two kinds of films: good ones, and bad ones. posted by orejones on November 07, 2002 at 10:20:52:
This is what I usually say too. And there are some good westerns too... however, I can't think of any *great* one. This is not a damnation of the genre, just the statement of the fact that no great director has ever made a great film of that kind.
At least I can't think of any. The Unforgiven is a good film, but not much more than that.
Like it or not, the original question mentioned Federico - and that puts the plank HIGH.
When you think Fellini you are in the masterpiece territory, and the entrance fee is steep.
Follow Ups:
--Victor, on an emotional level yes--but not the Eastwood one --fine as it was.Ford's The Searchers and Wellman's the Ox-Bow Incident come close--and the undertones of racial inequality and intolerance pushed the boundaries of the time.
While Ford's film slipped through the net,Wellman's was restricted and suffered accordingly.
