Inside Moves is one of my favorite small films. I believe Donner went straight to it after Superman in an attempt to get away from the oversaturation of that experience--so Savage's "flight" was a bit of an inside joke. One other notable in the movie is the man who plays the double amputee, whose name escapes me at the moment. He won an Oscar for his first film role, playing essentially himself in Best Years of Our Lives.

That's an interesting tidbit about Savage' "flight", thanks for sharing! I'm not surprised about Donner wanting to do a small film after Superman-I've read a number of articles about the making of that film, as well as listened to Donner and Tom Manckewicz' commentary on the DVD.My favorite scene in the movie is Savage and Scarwid dancing to Sinatra's Put Your Dreams Away-very touching.
The man you are referring to is Harold Russell, who indeed played in "The Best Years of Our Lives" in 1946 and won 2 Oscars for that performance, as Best Supporting Actor and a Special Oscar for his performance. He lost both hands to an explosives accident during WWII. Harold Russell was featured in 3 movies, the one listed above, Inside Moves in 1980 & Dogtown in 1997. He died this year at the age of 88 on Jan. 29,2002.
