In Reply to: American Graffiti. Could this be Lucas' best film after Star Wars I? posted by edta on August 31, 2003 at 20:02:12:
"American Graffiti" is a better and more important film. It stands as one of the great American films of the 70s, ranking right up there with the likes of "Five Easy Pieces", "The Last Picture Show", and "Harold and Maude."I really like "Star Wars" (the first film) but feel it is more an "entertainment" than a work of great cinema.
I would also say that "THX-1138" is a better film than "Star Wars." It's a small film but says something important in an original and engaging way. "Star Wars" is formulae - a western in the outer galaxy - and is one of the most entertaining films I've ever seen and is certainly a 4-star flick AND the best of its kind but "American Graffiti" is a smaller film and a greater achievement.
