A nice little film with some "unusual" characters but acting in regular, human situations. The continual movement from the actor to the subject was effective, blurring the line of reality vs. fiction. Perhaps the best part was the lack of histrionics, scenery-chewing, or overacting. Made me realize how mannered so much acting is these days. A good companion to "Lost in Translation," another film in which little things happen. Flaubert is smiling.

which is also set in a store with a cast of unusual characters, nor the clever script of American Buffalo, also set in a store, tho for most of the action it is closed

Not that " Smoke " is a bad film, but I think mostly overrated. I saw him three times, or better said 2 1/2...
But the idea of comparing both film seems to me utterly wrong!
When have you looked at " The Shop around ".. the last time.
I needed years to find this film good at last.
