What do the youngish now! :-(( Yes, it does refer to the vast expanses. Many other things too, but as I said, archaic.

BTW - don't know how young those people are, but the current under-30 generation is likely going to be the most "lost" generation in the Russian history. It is sad situation.

Motherland is much more political, patriotic than the warm and fuzzy sentimental old one. I strongly associate it with the Soviet brain waching.

I think it IS important, but central? Perhaps not quite.
