I was familiar with Wagner's ring before I read Tolkien's. While comparisons are odious, I'm sure you agree, I couldn't help noticing that the earlier trilogy (quadrilogy?) was the more effective and moving, besides having come first. But those unfamiliar with the musical giant's work unabashedly defend Tolkien -- witness this thread.

I'm not criticising Jackson cinematically, or Tolkien literarily. They just bored me, compared to the real thing -- which in the wrong hands, by the way, can be a terrible bore too!
