I don't really expect to find an answer to this, but it's pretty amazing some of the stuff you guys know, so I'll give it a try anyway.I saw a movie last night called 'The Pursuit of Happiness' with Frank Whaley and Annabeth Gish. It was made in 2001. Pretty far into the movie, the lead guy is packing his stuff to move to Seattle I think, and he's listening to this song on his boombox for a bit and then turns it down when his buddy comes in. The singer has a somewhat husky voice and he or someone else is playing an acoustic guitar. Richie Havens keeps coming to mind, but the guys voice didn't seem quite that husky. It could be though.
Anybody?

This may help you, some of the clips sound nice but I didnt hear any that fit your description so maybe you will need to email someone on the contact page.
If you can watch the movie again and its not listed in the credits sometimes writing down a few lines of lyrics and googling them inside "" will find you the song on lyrics pages.
I didn't even think about searching on some of the lyrics. I was hoping it would be on again, but it looks like I'll have to pay a visit to the local video store.
