With films like that, that are SO heavily based in the Soviet history and culture, I always have a question how well would a foreign audience receive it. It sounds like you were able to break through the hard layer, and get your reward! My favorite scene has been where he is desperately trying to catch the look of her. Kinda put the whole war into perspective - it is all about human loss.

I got a lot out of it, but I'm sure it helps that I have an interest in Russian/Soviet history & culture---certainly more than the average American would. (We see WWII in a completely different light over here---this is something never taught in US schools---as a matter of fact, WWII is barely taught even from the American perspective.)Yet, at the same time, it does not take much knowledge of culture to admire a beautiful woman ;)
