So the "actual" Samurai trained over generations of families for centuries.... and they pick some guy like Tom Cruise. Sorry, no way. I didn't think before renting that HE was going to BE the last Samurai. Probably would have saved myself a few hours of anguish if I would have known.
I think with Tom's money he could have chosen a more realistic storyline for his $20,000,000 check that year. Maybe it's this willingness to portray any role so long as the check's in the bank, regardless of a poor story, that makes some people not like him so. I would have passed and moved on to other offers (there are other offers, right?). :)
Follow Ups:
there really was a "foreign" samurai, but he was an Englishman, not the Civil War veteran Tom Cruise portrays
Japanese warlords used Dutch mercenaries in some of their campaigns too
Unimpressed with this film, but I did like Tom Cruise in Michael Mann's "Collateral"
