prior to the movie's premiere at a benefit concert at the LA Forum in 1977....People were on their feet for a standing O at the end of the song...Certainly prompted me to see the film which I enjoyed. I loved the "filmed on a soundstage" quality to the film...Reminded me of the Hollywood musicals of the 40's and 50's...DeNiro's portrayal of the obnoxious musician was great and Minnelli's long-suffering wife was wonderful as well. No one can cry on screen with such a heartfelt emotion like Minnelli...as witnessed in this film as well as Cabaret....The DVD features an extended musical number which was cut from the film. Scorcese proves that he is comfortable in any genre....Certainly not his best but testament to his considerable talent....
