.... great sci-fi flick. And one with an a-typical point of view. Unlike any of the Star Trek series we don't see space from a state-of-the-art "warp 9 capable" inter-stellar battle cruiser. The crew aren't spit-and-polish academy types . No careers or high ideals are being persued here. Rather, we have a rag-tag group of individuals scratching out their survival by taking on the occasional honest cargo hauling job, but more often running contraband product from one planet to the next. Payoffs don't always happen and the Captains' biggest fear is running out of fuel and supplies in deep space.I love this setup. Although the post American Civil War costumes, dialects, background music and constumes could just as easily be swapped out for an even earier time in world history. It could have been taken from the barouque period, a time of exploration, lawlessness and piracy. Ala Captain Blood. But the show works for me as it is. Both this movie and the series, which has been playing on the Sci-Fi channel this summer.
I'm gratified that this group of actors, and creator Joss Whedon, are getting the big screen break that they are, and that the show Firefly is finally getting the exposure that it was denied in the initial showings. The episodes were shown out of sequence and only once before having the plug pulled on it. Obviously, someone high up at Fox didn't like Sci-Fi.
