Jazz guitarist Bill Frissell has fashioned a score here which largely consists of quieter Miles Davis from his electric period. The story involves reclusive one hit novelist William Forrster (Sean Connery) who spies on neighborhood inner city youths from his apartment atop and old building. On a dare one of the young men (Rob Brown) enters Forrester's apartment and is discovered. Fleeing, he leaves behind his back pack and this leads to a relationship between the two where Forrester begins mentoring the young man. The student eventually qualifies for a basketball scholarship in a prestigious Manhatan prep school. There he develops a friendship with a white girl (Anna Paquin) and an intellectual rivalry with an English professor (F. Murray Abraham) who eventually accuses the younf man of plagarism. Gus Van Sant directed. A good story with fine acting.
Follow Ups:
that it's directed by Gus V S. I thought it would do great business but it flopped.
Sean is at his blustery best, too.
