French, post-WWII. Set in 19th century Paris. Main characters, a couple in a theater troupe, if I remember correctly. Great mime scene near the beginning where he retells someone stealing a watch and attempting to shift responsiblity to her. Film was used to move Jews around Paris. I think Jean Renoir directed.
Follow Ups:
It was a Marcel Carné film starring Arletty and Jean-Louis Barrault. Saw it sooooo long ago, but was entranced.Paradise, by the way, was the French theatre term for the uppermost seats in the rear.
Yeah, how sweeet it is. http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/party/party0001.gif
