Clive Owens is an ad executive in Chicago. He is happily married and has a young daughter with Type I diabetes whose third kidney transplant has failed. He also loses his biggest account at work. One morning when he doesn't have enough money on the train for the fare a complete stanger, Jenifer Aniston, offers to pay. They exchange business cards and one thing leads to another. Lunch ensues, then dinner, then sex in a hotel she picks. Just as they get going a thief breaks in, beats Owen up, and rapes Aniston. Neither report the incidents to the police bcause both are married. The the thief starts calling Owen to blackmail him. That's all I can say without spoilers but suffice it to say that a lot more happens in this skillfully written, directed, and acted film.
Follow Ups:
They really tried, but...The directing is dull with no sense of style or flow. Anniston seems unsure of her character and unsure of herself.
I'm usually pretty clueless when it comes to spotting plot twists, but the Jennifer character's true intentions are given away early during the first train scene with the shot of legs and high heels. And why else would she buy tickets for a total stranger?
Why does a stud like Clive Owen keep letting this dweeb French guy beat the snot out of him?
If you want to see this type thing done better, check out "Body Heat," a film with intensity AND a brain. William Hurt and Kathleen Turner effortlessly convince.
