In Reply to: New "Casanova" starring... Heath Ledger? posted by tinear on December 14, 2005 at 04:35:39:
...the very WASPish, very blond Donald Sutherland in Fellini's version?Ledger can actually act, y'know, hunk status or not. Don't dismiss him on account of his looks - he may be fine in this, although I have my doubts about the filmmakers. Moreover, I believe Casanova was youngish when he met the young lady who is the heroine of the movie and reportedly the only woman he ever truly loved. ( What screenwriter could resist?) So it's hardly surprising the producers wanted a handsome young movie star in the role. The key for me will be in the acting and revelation of the inner man in the part. May work, may not.
But it doesn't matter to me whether Ledger looks like my idea of Cassanova or the historical figure - as long as he *acts* like my idea of Cassnova.
Latin doesn't = brunette. There are blond Italians, and when is the last time anyone "saw" Cassanova anyway?
Maybe you want to check out Johnny Depp as the Earl of Rochester in The Libertine?
As much as I admire Del Toro's acting chops (and I admire them a great deal)...I can't say he would appeal to me as Cassanova. Plus he doesn't look Italian to me.

...for enlightenment on Mr. Ledger's acting chops I suggest you take a close look as his small role in Monster's Ball. That's when I started taking him seriously as a thesp.
